Baseball Fever

This summer the boys and I really got into baseball.  Since we were coming back to the U.S., we planned to hit three baseball games:  Yankees (for Laird), Nationals (for Jeffrey), and A's (for me).   [Note: All pictures are from the Nationals game - we did not bring the camera to the other two games.]

Game No. 1: Yankees vs. Red Sox.  This was a tough road trip.  We flew from El Salvador to Virginia on a Thursday.  I went into our main office on Friday, and then on Saturday we left early for a road trip to NYC.  This was probably a bit ambitious.  Long drive in the morning, all afternoon at the American Museum of Natural History (fun!), we then ventured over to Yankee Stadium.

Note to self: Finding a great deal on parking is not worth the long walk through the Bronx, even in broad daylight!  Swarms of people - after all, the Yankees are playing the Red Sox, who would eventually go on to win the World Series.  Our seats were almost as high as you could go on the left field side.  The home team lost, which is pretty common when we are rooting for the home team.  The game ended after 10:30 pm, which was okay given that we were still a little jet lagged (felt like 8:30), but getting out of the parking lot and back onto the highway took forever.  We arrived back in Virginia about 4 am.  What you thought I would get a hotel in New York City?  Ha.

Game No. 2: Nationals vs. Twins.  One week after our Yankees adventure we hit a Nationals game (we were only in VA for 2 weeks!).  Not a night game!  Rather, a very hot game.  And our seats were on the first base/Right field side, and so we had a great, unobstructed view of the SUN.  We came dressed to cheer for the home team, and we got our money's worth!  11 innings!  As we finished the game, the sun finally dipped below the other side of the stadium.  Shade at last!

Game No. 3: After settling into Canada, the boys and I went down to Seattle to see the A's play.  Pouring rain on the way there and on the way back.  Pacific NW living up to its billing!  Even the stadium was quite chilly - it  being the last week of the season in September.  The game was not of tremendous import - the A's had wrapped up a playoff spot by then, and the Mariners were out of it.  We had much better seats down on the lowest level on the third base side.  Jeffrey had fun running to the railing to try to get one of the players to toss him a ball as they went back to the dugout.  He came very close one time, only to be out-jumped by an adult woman.  C'mon lady!

We put a lot of time into baseball season this year.  It makes it a lot more worth the effort when the boys are into it.  Till next year baseball!
